Whether experienced on the ground or from the air, McBride Inlet is a thriller, another planet. Ice chokes the narrow entrance to the inlet and a festival of bergs gathers and mingles along the shoreline pushed by the wind and tide. About halfway down the inlet a shallow underwater shelf stops the really big bergs where they gather like titans. Kayaking here when the ice is thick is a dangerous challenge, for the water is icy cold and the big bergs can roll at any time. More than one paddler has found themselves a reluctant swimmer in McBride Inlet. Photographer: Bill Eichenlaub
