I spent a remarkable December morning photographing a stunning sunrise looking east. After taking several hundred shots of the amazing, low level, winter Alaskan light, I saw some rain moving my way, and thought it was all over. Then I turned around. I nearly fell over when I saw this intense double rainbow arching over the thin band of spruce trees near the Gustavus dock. Rainbows are unusual in the winter time because our precipitation is usually in the form of snow, rather than rain. But when rainbows do happen, they really happen! On this morning, the low winter light created a magically intense rainbow that Gustavians are still talking about. Photographer: Sean Neilson
