A rare, brilliantly clear blue sky stretched over Glacier Bay during the heart of winter as I flew in a small plane, offering me an uncommon perspective of this often overcast region. From my vantage point above, I could see a sweeping panorama where a vast, uninterrupted blanket of fresh, white snow draped the mountains, fjords, and valleys in pristine silence. Every ridge and glacier was sharply defined, the contours of the rugged landscape accentuated by the crisp winter light, while shadows traced the subtle undulations of ice and rock. Seeing the scale and complexity of Glacier Bay from above, from jagged peaks to sweeping ice fields, made me appreciate the delicate interplay between snow, terrain, and light. On the ground, the scene would feel remote and inaccessible, but from the air, the vast expanse of snow-covered wilderness was laid bare, and I could fully take in the power of nature and the fleeting, magical quality of a perfectly clear winter day in Glacier Bay.
