A Song Sparrow perches atop the bare stalk of a cow parsnip plant, now stripped of all its flowers and seeds in the late fall. Even without its blossoms, the tall, sturdy stalk provides an ideal lookout for the sparrow, giving it height to sing and survey its surroundings for food or potential threats. Song Sparrows are widespread across North America and are known for their rich, varied songs, which they use to defend territory and communicate with mates. The cow parsnip, though no longer flowering, still plays an important role in the ecosystem by offering structure and habitat for birds and insects throughout the year. This quiet autumn scene reflects the ongoing interactions between plants and wildlife, even after the growing season has ended. Photographer: Sean Neilson
