Rockweed is a brown algae commonly found on rocky shorelines in the mid to lower intertidal zones of Glacier Bay. While it is typically attached to large rocks or bedrock, in calm bays rockweed can sometimes be found in abundance attached to smaller stones. When the tide is high the air bladders on the rockweed may have sufficient flotation to lift or partially lift the full plant and the rock at its base. The result is rockweed floaters blown around by the wind that can end up colonizing areas that may be higher in the intertidal than usual. This particular tideflat has a very high density of rockweed. Photographer: Bill Eichenlaub
