This Red-breasted sapsucker’s nest was located about 300 yards (280m) from the site where about 6 clumps of multi-stemmed willows contained over a dozen wells. After the chicks hatched, the adults could be seen flitting from well to well, then flying off in the direction of the nest. After the chicks fledged, two were seen perched next to these wells, often immobile for many minutes. The parents would arrive and feed them, then forage in the well next to the chick. This went on for several days until the chicks slowly started foraging for themselves. Photographer: Bill Eichenlaub
