This 45‑foot humpback whale skeleton is on display in Bartlett Cove, near the Park Visitor Information Center. Standing beside it, while hearing whales blow in the cove behind you, creates a kind of magical connection to the sea and the creatures that inhabit it. I still recall being stunned seeing my first articulated whale skeleton, a 40 ft sperm whale in Ka'anapali, Maui. And later skeletons such as the three in the Harvard Museum of Natural History, a fin whale, a sperm whale and a right whale, suspended from the ceiling! And the enormous humpback whale skeleton at the Dominican Republic National Aquarium. My point is, articulated whales are out there. You may not see a whale in Glacier Bay up close and personal but if you have the chance to see an articulated skeleton anywhere in the world, take it, they are amazing. Photographer: Bill Eichenlaub
