In some areas dwarf dogwood forms extensive carpets, and in the late summer the leaves will turn reddish and the bright red berries are thick. I once asked Greg Streveler, a local expert on the natural history of Glacier Bay, “Greg, there are so many dwarf dogwood berries but nothing seems to eat them! What’s up with that???” He smiled, gave me his famous sideways grin and said, “Mastodons.” It was of course fanciful but it sparks the imagination to envision mastodons roaming the coast of Glacier Bay, feasting on dwarf dogwood berries and scaring the bears away.
