Two Trumpeter Swans linger along the edge of the Salmon River in Gustavus. They are occasionally seen near the river mouth during winter months. Trumpeter swans are the largest native waterfowl in North America, with wingspans that can exceed eight feet. They get their name from their loud, trumpet-like calls, which can carry for miles across wetlands. Once nearly driven to extinction by hunting and habitat loss, they have made a strong comeback through conservation efforts. Trumpeter swans often mate for life, and pairs work together to build massive nests that can be several feet across. Photographer: Sean Neilson
