What is the most common mammal in the Glacier Bay area? Probably the northern red-backed vole but their numbers vary tremendously from year to year. Some years they are abundant and their runways in summer and snow tunnels in winter are easy to spot. Other years they are few and seldom seen. They inhabit the fields, shrublands, forests and yards throughout most of Alaska eating grass, seeds, fruit, lichens, fungi and insects. While they are a bane to gardeners, they are an important food for weasels, marten, foxes, coyotes, owls and many hawks. Other small mammals found in and near Glacier Bay include deer mouse, tundra vole, longtail vole, masked shrew and the wandering shrew. Photographer: Bill Eichenlaub
