Mountain hemlock grows in the windswept sub-alpine, often high above the typical kayaker/cruiser experience. The tree grows widely in Glacier Bay National Park but is not often seen up close by most visitors. In many parts of Glacier Bay all you need do is look up the nearest mountain to the treeline - the point where the trees go no higher - and you may be looking at mountain hemlock. These were photographed along the trail just a little above the tram drop-off in Juneau. Photographer: Bill Eichenlaub
