An older geologic map shows these high elevation rocks covered by a glacial remnant. Now the ice is gone and plants are colonizing crevasses and dips where soil is slowly accumulating. It is likely that in a few hundred years this same view will show these rocks covered with a sub-alpine forest of mountain hemlock and moss. But for now, with each footfall we had to watch every step, the rocks are loose and even the big ones could move under foot. Photographer: Bill Eichenlaub
